State of Palestine: Factions hold unity rally amid stumbling Hamas-Fatah talks

Members of Palestinian factions held a unity rally in Gaza City, Sunday, to demand that the Fatah and Hamas leadership achieve reconciliation amid stumbling Egypt-brokered talks between the factions in Cairo.

Earlier in the week, Fatah accused Hamas of failing to commit to the landmark reconciliation deal. In turn, Hamas accused Fatah and the Palestinian Authority (PA) of holding up the unity accord. Both factions announced that they would delay transferring power to the reconciliation government to carry out its duties in Gaza.

Leader of Palestine's Islamic Jihad Movement, Khaled al-Baths, said that "the crowds of Gazans have gone out to say to Fatah and Hamas that they have to accomplish the reconciliation without hesitation because our national future is in real danger. It needs national unity to accomplish the goal of the liberation against the Israeli enemy."

On October 12, Palestinian political factions Hamas and Fatah signed the reconciliation deal in Cairo. Under the agreement, brokered by Egypt, Hamas and Fatah agreed to cede control over Gaza to a government of national unity. The two sides also reportedly agreed that the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt would be operated by the guards of PA leader Mahmoud Abbas.

Gaza and the West Bank have been administered separately since 2007, respectively by Hamas and the Fatah-ruled PA.
