Spain: 750,000 Catalans demand freedom for 'political prisoners' in Barcelona

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Barcelona on Saturday to demand the release of arrested Catalan pro-independence officials and leaders.

The event was organised by pro-Catalan independence groups, the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Omnium Cultural. According to local police 750,000 people participated in the rally. The slogan 'freedom for political prisoners' stood at the head of the rally, in which family members of the imprisoned also took part.

"In front of the European Union and the world, and in front of the President and the government of Catalonia, our determination continues the fight for a full democracy. No doubt, this is the path to raise the freedom for our prisoners, to recover the institutions of government, and to build the Catalan Republic," Agusti Alcoberro, the Catalan National Assembly President, told the crowds.

The Spanish government charged several government and civic figures from Catalonia with rebellion, sedition and the misuse of public funds, including former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, who fled the country after Madrid imposed direct rule over Catalonia.
