Carlos Puigdemont, the former President of Catalonia, gave a news conference from Brussels, Tuesday.

In a press statement, Puigdemont explained that the decision to flee to Brussels was made after receiving information that the Spanish government was preparing an ‘unprecedented offensive against the people of Catalonia’.The former Catalan President was referring to a prosecutor’s report which indicated that members of the Catalan government, including himself, could face imprisonment. Puigdemont also reiterated that the Catalan government was open to dialogue with its counterparts in Madrid. “With a complaint confirmed by the prosecution, with penalties that could result in 500 years of imprisonment against the government and members of the parliament, accompanied by arrests, on Friday we agreed unanimously that the [Catalan] Government would prioritise prudence, security and moderation,” Puigdemont explained. The latest chapter of the Catalan crisis follows the unilateral declaration of independence by the Catalan Parliament last Friday. The Spanish Senate responded by triggering Article 155 of the Constitution, resulting in the region of Catalonia being brought under direct rule.
