Russia: Steinmeier and Putin agree to put differences behind them at Moscow presser

"Despite the known political difficulties, Russian-German relations do not stand still, and we are ready to work together to develop them further," said Russian President Vladimir Putin after the talks with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Moscow, Wednesday.

Putin noted that two presidents "exchanged opinions on the topical international and regional issues". He went on to say that "it is necessary to seek a full and decisive elimination of terrorists on the territory of this country, to increase efforts to promote the political settlement," when touching on the situation in Syria.

Addressing the issue of south-eastern Ukraine, the Russian leader stated that "unfaltering implementation of the Minsk agreements should be the basis of a comprehensive resolution," adding that "Russian initiative to establish a UN mission to ensure the security of the OSCE [Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe] monitors in the conflict zone" has been discussed.

Speaking about bilateral relations between the two powers, Steinmeier hoped there could be progress in the future.

"We should question whether there are ways to get out of the negative spiral which we've experienced in the past few years," underlined Steinmeier. "We cannot, of course, undo the alienation of the past. But it must be our common goal to move on from the great differences of the past few years."
