The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces declared the total liberation of the city of Raqqa, the capital of the self-proclaimed Islamic State’s (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) ‘caliphate’, speaking in the Syrian city on Friday.
Speaking at a ceremony before military officials and press members, General Command of Syrian Democratic Forces spokesperson Talal Silo stated, "We proudly announce today, from the heart of Raqqa city, the victory of our forces in the major battle against ISIS terrorist organisation."
The General then dedicated such "historic victory to all humanity, to our heroic martyrs, and to the all victims of terrorism in Syria and the entire world."
Raqqa has been IS' stronghold since 2014.
