Spain: 'After 300 years of waiting, three weeks won't help' - Catalans 'disappointed' with Puigdemont

Thousands gathered at the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona on Tuesday to watch Catalan President Carles Puigdemont's statement in front of the Catalan Parliament, Tuesday. In his address Catalan leader suspended declaration of independence from Spain in order to first seek negotiation solution with the central government."I thought this is what would happen, that it wouldn't come to pass. We have been waiting for 300 years, I do not think that now we have three weeks to wait for something that it will help to do everything in a more civilized manner," said one local resident.Catalans appeared to be divided over the statement. "He [Puigdemont] says he wants dialogue but Catalonia has asked Spanish Government like 17 times, and every time doors have been closed, said demonstrator Christina, adding, "So I believed today he would finally declare [independence]. And I’m a bit disappointed."Another demonstrator David, meanwhile, said, "I’m very happy even thought I missed the typical sentence of 'I proclaim the Independence of Catalonia'. But still I’m very happy because it means soon what he said will be applied and it looks that at the end Catalonia will be independent after so much time." Catalonia held a referendum on October 1 to decide on the region's independence; however the Spanish government deemed the action 'illegal' and 'unconstitutional'.
