Philippines: Hundreds protest Duterte's threat to expand martial law

Philippines, Manila
September 21, 2017 at 15:58 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of protesters burned an effigy of President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte at the Mendiola Gates of Malacanang Palace in San Miguel, Manila, on Thursday, following a warning that he would expand his declaration of martial law nationwide.

Several banners reading "Fight all out war" and a large mural comparing their president to Hitler were the main focal point of a protest that was led by the Philippines National Democratic Front.

Satur Ocampo, Philippines National Democratic Front co-founder, described Duterte as a "puppet of US imperialism and anti-people in most of his policies." He challenged the president’s warning, saying "if martial law did not result in the improvement of the Philippine economy, Philippine society, Philippine politics, why should President Duterte try to emulate it and threaten to declare martial law on his own?"

In May, Duterte placed the southern part of the country under martial law to help deal with a pro-Islamic State group of militants in the area.
