UN: Guterres condemns N. Korea's nuclear tests and Myanmar crisis as 72nd UNGA kicks off

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres opened the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), at the UN headquarters, in New York City, Tuesday.In his opening statement, Guterres noted that the international community is "shocked by the dramatic escalation of sectarian tensions in Myanmar," which he said "had led more than 400,000 desperate people to flee, putting regional stability at risk." He went on to call on Myanmar to "end the military operations and recognise the right of refugees to return."The UN secretary general also condemned North Korea's "provocative" nuclear and missile tests "unequivocally," calling on the DPRK "to fully comply" with UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions. He added that "global anxieties about nuclear weapons are at the highest level since the end of the Cold War."Representatives of all 193 UN members states gathered in New York City for the first day of the 72nd UNGA session. The General Assembly is set to continue until September 25.
