Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi defends military's 'security operations' in Rohingya crisis

Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi defended the country's military in its handling of the Rohingya crisis, in a televised address from Naypyidaw, Tuesday.

Suu Kyi argued that the country's security forces "have been instructed to adhere strictly to the code of conduct in carrying out security operations, to exercise all due restraint and to take full measures to avoid collateral damage and the harming of innocent civilians."

The Myanmar state counsellor stressed that "it is not the intention of the Myanmar government to apportion blame or to abnegate responsibility," before adding that Myanmar condemns human rights violations and is "committed to the restoration of peace."

The nobel peace prize winner went on, urging journalists to "join us there, see for yourself what is happening and think for yourself, 'What can we do to remove these problems.'"

It was Suu Kyi's first address since the latest round of violence against the Rohingya began in the north Rakhine state.

More than 400,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled into Bangladesh, according to UN estimates amid widespread reports of indiscriminate killings, arson, looting and rape by the Myanmar military. UN human rights chief, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, condemned the Myanmar's security "clearance operation," calling it "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing."
