South Korea: Ballistic missile drills held following North's nuclear test

The South Korean military conducted live-fire drills, simulating an attack on a nuclear site, at an undisclosed location on the Sea of Japan coast, on Monday.

The drills involved fighter jets and surface-to-surface missiles, all of which "hit their designated targets," according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The tests come following North Koreas successful trial of a miniaturised hydrogen bomb on Sunday. The North claims that the bomb can be mounted on an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).

The announcement was made mere hours after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake was registered near the North Korean nuclear testing site Punggye-ri in North Hamgyong Province, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). According Korean Central Television, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un had ordered the test.

The past months have seen a buildup of tensions on the Korean Peninsula and an exchange of aggressive rhetoric between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un.
