Russia: ‘New colonisation’ - LNA Commander Haftar slams EU proposal to settle migrants in Libya

Russian Federation, Moscow
August 14, 2017 at 15:44 GMT -00:00 · Published

Khalifa Haftar, Commander of Libyan National Army (LNA) (Arabic): Actually this [preserving the unity of the Libyan state] depends on the Libyans themselves. Russia is a friendly state, and it behaves accordingly."

Journalist (English): "Can you comment on the situation on the Libyan coast with migrants, please?"

Khalifa Haftar, Commander of Libyan National Army (LNA) (Arabic): "Unfortunately, some [people] perceive illegal migration in their point view. But we understand this problem better than anyone because the flow of migrants is coming through our territory. We are a transit state for this migration. Of course, the migration passes through the land boundary and not through the maritime border. Some people want these groups of illegal migrants to settle on our coast. So in this case we will have to settle them. Actually, in this case a new colonisation will happen, in an extremely strange way. We are absolutely against it. But it is true that the land border stretching over 4,000 kilometres demands close attention. They should be equipped with the appropriate equipment. With regard to the personnel, we have it. Once we have the appropriate technical capabilities, we will stop all illegal migration through our territory."

Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar stated that Libya is "absolutely against" the EU's proposal to settle migrants in Libya, when speaking to press, in Moscow, Monday. The proposal would see a portion of those migrants and refugees passing through Libya settling in the North African nation.

Haftar expressed that "we are absolutely against" the fact that "some people want these groups of illegal migrants to settle on our coast," noting that "in this case a new colonisation will happen, in an extremely strange way." The proposal is being led by Italy, but has been criticised by German Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel.

The LNA commander went on say that the land border stretching over 4,000 kilometres (2,485.48 miles) "demands close attention." He noted that Libya has enough personnel but lacks appropriate equipment and technical capabilities, adding that "once we have the appropriate technical capabilities, we will stop all illegal migration through our territory.

Commenting on the cooperation with Russia on preserving Libya's unity, Haftar stressed that it "depends on the Libyans themselves" and that "Russia is a friendly state, and it behaves accordingly."
