Uruguay: Footage shows moment huge Nazi eagle is salvaged from WWII shipwreck

Footage released Thursday shows the recovery of a bronze Nazi eagle embossed with a swastika that salvaged from the shipwrecked Admiral Graf Spee warship off the coast of Montevideo in 2006, with the statue now set to go on auction.

Weighing between 300 and 400 kilograms (661-881 pounds) and measuring nine feet (2.74 metres) wide, the eagle was found on the stern of the sunken Graf Spee battleship. The Nazi German vessel was scuttled by its captain off the coast of Uruguay in 1939 following a sea battle with Britain's Royal Navy.

The giant statue was salvaged by a company belonging to businessman Alfredo Etchegaray in 2006 and thereafter sat in a warehouse while ownership rights were settled in a legal case. The country's Supreme Court eventually ruled that the Uruguayan state was the eagle's rightful owner, but that Etchegaray should receive 50 percent of the sale price when it is auctioned off in the coming months.

However, Germany fears the eagle could end up in the hands of Nazi enthusiasts and had previously sought to block its exhibition to prevent it going on the market for Third Reich insignia.

Bids for the eagle are thought to start at $26 million (€22 million). It has been suggested that the proceeds should go towards funding the Armed Forces of Uruguay.
