USA: Activists declare three day Baltimore ceasefire 'a success'

United States, Baltimore
August 6, 2017 at 23:14 GMT -00:00 · Published

Activists in Baltimore, Maryland, claimed the community-organised 72 hour ceasefire initiative was successful despite at least two murders over the weekend, Sunday.

Local residents attempted to push back against the number of shootings in a city that has one of the highest murder rates in the US.

The group of activists was able to involve the city residents in at least 40 hours of non-violence, however, the ceasefire was broken on Saturday evening when a 24-year-old man was fatally shot and a few hours later another man was killed by gunfire.

City residents gathered on Sunday afternoon to conclude the 72 hour initiative with a vigil and a community walk. Several city officials were in attendance, including Baltimore City Mayor Catherine Pugh and Baltimore City Attorney Marilyn Mosby.

"The ceasefire was a success, the ceasefire was a success," said ceasefire organiser Ogun Gordy. "We brought out the city together on a higher frequency and now our minds are more focused as one on whatever issue that can become."

Baltimore has suffered at least 210 homicides in 2017, close to last year’s rate of 318 in just seven months, despite the city's relatively small population of 615,000 people.

Further anger over the murder rate has been exacerbated by a series of high profile cases of African Americans being killed by police or while in police custody, including the death of Freddie Gray, which sparked mass protests in 2015.
