Brazil: Anger outside Sao Paulo presidency offices as Temer ducks graft trial

Scuffles broke out in front of the Presidency of the Republic building in Sao Paulo, Wednesday, as Brazilian Congress voted on whether to proceed with corruption charges against sitting President Michel Temer.

Watching on big screens, protesters held banners depicting Temer as a vampire alongside signs that read “Temer out”.

Despite polls saying that some 81 percent of the country believed Temer should be put on trial, Brazil’s Lower House of Congress rejected to pursue corruption charges against Temer on Wednesday.

Temer will stay on as president after the two-thirds majority necessary to suspend the president was not secured. Brazil’s Attorney General Rodrigo Janot has since stated that he would file several more corruption charges against the president in the next month.

Protesters have taken to the streets across the country since Brazilian newspaper O Globo published an article stating that Temer had been recorded agreeing to bribe former President of the Chamber of Deputies Eduardo Cunha. The allegations are part of the wide scale Brazilian anti-corruption investigation Operation Car Wash, in which Temer has become embroiled.
