Syria: RT journalist captures civilians accusing coalition of phosphorus use shortly before death in IS shelling

A freelance journalist working for RT Arabic, Khaled Al-Khatib, captured footage of Syrian civilians accusing coalition forces of using phosphorus weapons in civilian areas, shortly before he was killed in shelling by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).

The civilians, who had fled from Raqqa to Hama, accused US-led coalition forces of targeting civilian infrastructure in Raqqa and using phosphorus weapons in the area.

One civilian said that people were struck with "phosphorus bombs" in the cities of Raqqa, Jazara and Tabqah. The repeated use of white phosphorus in civilian areas is banned under international law. Another civilian said that "the coalition hit schools, civilians; children are not going to schools, and there are so many civilian causalities. Schools, hospitals and more are destroyed."

In June, Amnesty International condemned US-led forces for using white phosphorus ammunition on the outskirts of Raqqa. Samah Hadid, Middle East Director of Campaigns at Amnesty International, said in a statement that it "endangers the lives of thousands of civilians trapped in and around al-Raqqa city, and may amount to a war crime under these circumstances." Human Rights Watch (HRW) also expressed concerns that phosphorus had been used near populated areas of the city.

Journalist Al-Khatib, 25, had been working with RT since April. RT's Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan said RT would do its utmost to help his family.
