Russia: US Russian Chamber of Commerce president comments on new sanctions

SOT, Alexis Rodzianko, President & CEO of American Chamber of Commerce in Russia (English): "I think... I am not sure. He has the option either to sign or to veto. But the number of votes that were cast in favour of this law indicates that any veto is very likely to be overridden - number one. Number two, there were negotiations on the way between the Senate and the House, before the House passed the law, and in those negotiations the White House did get some concessions it considered important. So that might increase the probability that he will sign."

President & CEO of American Chamber of Commerce in Russia Alexis Rodzianko said that he hopes that the new US sanctions against Russia "will not be significantly harmful" to the two countries' business relations, speaking in an interview in Moscow, Wednesday.

"Obviously restrictions on doing business, whether they come from the US or whether they come from Russia, don't favour business," stated Rodzianko. He added American Chamber of Commerce in Russia hopes "that those new restrictions will not be significantly harmful," although "any restrictions do cause problems."

Commenting on the sanctions, Rodzianko stated that they "are a law," and described them as "less flexible" and "less manageable in terms of coordination with other countries and other allies" if compared to executive orders.

Prompted by his interviewer, who asked whether US President Donald Trump will sign the sanctions into a law, Rodzianko answered by saying that Trump "has the option either to sign or to veto. But the number of votes that were cast in favour of this law indicates that any veto is very likely to be overridden."

The US House of Representatives voted to push through a new package of sanctions against Russia in on Tuesday, 419 votes to 3. The bill must now pass through the Senate before being signed off on by US President Donald Trump.
