State of Palestine: 'We reject the electronic gates' - Abbas says no to security at al-Aqsa

Palestinian Territory, Occupied, Ramallah
July 21, 2017 at 20:51 GMT +00:00 · Published

President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas called the new security measures introduced by Israeli authorities to al-Aqsa mosque compound "political measures disguised with imaginary security motivations," speaking from the presidential headquarters in Ramallah in a televised address, Friday.

Abbas said that metal detectors at the compound’s entrances were installed by Israel "with the aim of imposing control on al-Aqsa, escaping the commitments of the peace process, and transforming the conflict from its political nature to a religious one."

"I consider the Palestinian leadership in a state of permanent assembly to follow up on all new developments," Abbas declared.

Earlier this week, Abbas' Fatah movement called for a 'Day of Rage' following the increase in security in the area of the al-Aqsa mosque, which includes security cameras and metal detectors, as a result of a shoot-out last Friday that left two Israeli police officers and three Palestinians dead.
