Italy: Scores of unaccompanied minor migrants housed in local centre amid growing crisis

A centre for receiving migrants in the town of Corigliano Calabro near Cosenza is housing more than 50 unaccompanied teenage migrants, with organisers and residents commenting on the situation for underage migrants, Friday.

Among the teenagers and children being housed in the centre was 17-year-old Mustafa Umani, who recounted his journey from Senegal, to Mali, to Burkina Faso, and all the way to Italy through the Libyan coast.

"Back in Senegal I had political problems, my dad had issues with local politicians and he escaped too. So some friends of my dad's told me you have to go, go away, so I left," Umani said.

He added that during his journey, "in Libya, I crossed the deserts in a car, four day with no water, no food, across the desert. When I arrived, I thought they would help me but Libya was terrible, many issues there."

Official figures estimate that 25,846 unaccompanied foreign minors arrived in Italy last year.
