Lebanon: Evidence of extrajudicial executions by Iraqi forces appearing ‘every single day' - HRW

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has received evidence of Iraqi soldiers performing extrajudicial executions on suspected members of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS) daily, according to HRW Executive Director of the Middle East and North Africa Division Sarah Leah Whitson, speaking from Beirut on Wednesday.

On being asked why Iraqi soldiers would carry out such actions, HRW spokesperson put the killings down to "feelings of revenge and knowing that they are going to get away with murder."

Whitson explained that the Human Rights Watch had discovered several detention sites where detainees were being held in "sub-human" conditions, where detainees are being forced to live without access to sanitation or minimal food provisions.

Whitson stated that HRW believes it is "practical" for the Iraqi government to review anyone held in detention within the time period prescribed under Iraqi law.

"Prime Minister Abadi has repeatedly recognised that there are abuses that are underway, has repeatedly promised investigations. But, we have never seen the results of those investigations," Whitson continued.

Ruptly reported on 'forcible relocation' of alleged IS families from Mosul on July 14 and on Iraqi soldiers’ alleged 'mistreatment of IS militants' on July 16.
