Bulgarian and international military vehicles and troops participated in the final stage of the 'Saber Guardian 17' [SG17] military exercises at a Bulgarian Air Force base near Shabla, Tuesday. The drills consisted of tactical exercises involving live firing by air defence forces. Serbian, Ukrainian and US units also reportedly took part in the exercises alongside their Bulgarian counterparts.

In this year's drills, the participating air forces were faced with S-300 long range surface-to-air missile systems, S-125 Neva surface-to-air missile systems and 2K12 Kub mobile surface-to-air missile systems; while MiG-29 fighter jets, SU-25 and L-39 jet aircraft and Mi-24 helicopters were deployed. The land forces involved OTR-21 Tochka, 9K32 Strela-2 portable systems, the ZU-23-2 autocannon, and the 9K33 Osa short-range tactical system. The exercises began on July 11 and will end on July 20.

Official guests at the event in Shabla included Bulgarian President Rumen Radev who praised the drills' delivery, saying "all the processes including planning, coordination and implementation were well organised and I would like to congratulate the drills leadership. I gave a high evaluation [of their performance]."

Conducted annually since 2013, SG17 takes place in Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary and serves as part of US European Command's Joint Exercise Program.
