South Korea: Red Cross in Seoul proposes talks with N. Korean counterparts

Korea, Republic of, Seoul

Acting chairperson of South Korea's National Red Cross Sunhyang Kim announced that the organisation had proposed a meeting with representatives from North Korea's Red Cross, speaking from Seoul, Monday. The statement comes after the South Korean government called for military talks with their northern counterparts earlier in the day.

Talks between representatives from both countries' respective Red Cross organisations have been proposed for August 1, with the reunification of families separated by the Korean Demilitarized Zone to top the agenda.

South Korean Vice-Defence Minister Suh Choo-suk announced from the South Korean Defence Ministry in Seoul on Tuesday that they had proposed a meeting at the border village of Panmunjom, a site previously used for similar inter-Korea talks. The vice-defence minister said he was hoping for a positive answer from their northern partners. The meeting is pitted to take place on July 21.

The offer from Seoul comes after recently elected South Korean President Moon Jae-in took office amidst the ongoing escalation of tensions between the two countries over North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

Earlier in the year, the US deployed a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) defence system to South Korea, with Pyongyang successfully launching an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time on July 4, 2017.
