Russia: Moscow scientists to send 'world’s first' Ebola vaccine to Guinea

The first 1,000 doses of Gam Evak Combi Ebola vaccine are ready to be sent to the Republic of Guinea from the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow, Wednesday.

Head of Biotechnology Alexander Semikhin noted that the vaccine "does not cure [the disease], it is aimed at preventing the disease in people".

According to Russia’s Ministry of Health Veronica Skvortsova, Gam Evak Combi is the world's first officially registered and clinically approved Ebola vaccine. Skvortsova presented Gam Evak Combi to the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva on 15 February.

"A group of employees from our Institute is now in Guinea, they’re organising a place for the vaccine storage and distribution," Semikhin said before adding "when they confirm that everything is ready, [we send] the plane there to deliver the vaccines."

The Republic of Guinea became the first African country hit by Ebola outbreak in 2014 that left about 2,535 people dead.
