Switzerland: HNC head discusses political transition in Syria after meeting with de Mistura
Head of the delegation of the Syrian High Negotiations Committee (HNC) Nasr al-Hariri discussed the progress made in working out a common position on Syria, after meeting with UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura, in Geneva, Wednesday.
It was al-Hariri's first official meeting with the UN mediator, during the most recent round of Geneva talks.
Speaking outside Palais des Nations, al-Hariri blamed the delegation of the Syrian government in keeping the old position in "continuous refusing to participate in any political negotiation". The HNC leader underlined that representatives of his group had participated "in very useful technical meetings" in June and July ahead of the Geneva talks.
Speaking on the issue of a possible formation of a unified delegation from the opposition fractions, al-Hariri confirmed that the groups had achieved some progress in "dialogue aimed at working out a common position". He also mentioned that the HNC had made a decision to include one representative from both Moscow and Cairo in their negotiating team.
The seventh round of Intra-Syrian peace talks began in Geneva on Monday. Since then de Mistura has held two sessions of negotiations with the delegation of the Syrian government, as well as unofficial working lunches with representatives of all the three opposition fractions participating in Geneva peace talks.
The latest round of talks is expected to wrap up on Saturday, July 15.
