Japan: Ex-police officer uses drone-cam to prevent suicide at Tojinbo clifftops

Japan, Tojinbo

It's yet another working day for 70-year-old former police officer Yukio Shige, who volunteers at the notorious suicide spot, Tojinbo cliffs, where he seeks to prevent people from taking their own lives. Shige has spent 14 years of his retirement on a mission to stop people from jumping to their deaths from the cliffs. Footage filmed on Thursday captured the Tojinbo cliffs' guard along with his volunteers busy at work as they set up drones with cameras to monitor the area. Once they see people who are about to jump, they run to the rescue and attempt to talk them out of it.

"We have saved 597 people who tried to commit suicide at the cliff. Those people who want to commit suicide actually don’t really want to die, they are sending an SOS message. We know that so we try to act upon it and get their problem out of their hearts," said Shige.

The retired police officer runs a non-profit organisation that takes care of rescued people by providing them with guidance and shelter. His efforts have also helped draw attention to Japan’s suicide rates that are yet again on the rise. It's estimated that an average of 70 people in Japan commit suicide every day.
