UK: LGBTQ activists march in Belfast for same-sex marriage, against DUP

LGBTQ activists marched through the streets of Belfast, Saturday, demanding the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

The protesters assembled on Writers' Square before heading towards Belfast City Hall, where several speakers took turns to address the crowd.

One of them, actress Bronagh Waugh, said, "the petition of concern must be reformed. Let the people of Northern Ireland decide what they want. We want change, and we want equal marriage, and we will not go away until we get it."

John O'Doherty, Director of The Rainbow Project, stated, "as citizens of Northern Ireland, we're being denied the right to marry, despite the fact that the majority of people support its introduction. But we must not let that dampen our spirits. Each of you here today will look back at this day and remember, 'I was there.'"

The Northern Ireland Assembly has voted on five occasions on the introduction of same-sex marriage. At the last vote, in November 2015, it narrowly voted in favour, 53 votes to 52. However, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) used a Stormont veto on the motion.
