Russia: Lavrov and Gabriel agree must discuss NATO troop deployment in Europe

Russian Federation, Krasnodar

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his German counterpart Sigmar Gabriel said that discussions over the deployment of NATO troops must take place, when speaking at a joint press at the opening of the 14th German-Russian partnership conference in Krasnodar.

The Russian foreign minister stated that NATO has repeatedly increased its military presence in areas of Europe, which had previously been restricted by an earlier agreement.

Lavrov stated that Russia's North Atlantic colleagues know what the "real balance of forces" is, as they have declined the proposal for NATO and Russian military experts to sit down to discuss the deployment of troops on borders between Russia and NATO countries.

Gabriel said that it is both a "role and duty" of countries both within the EU and NATO frameworks to discuss disarmament and conflict resolutions.

"It would be nice if we were back in this situation when not only the US and Russia, bigger partners, but us, players in Europe, were talking about disarmament, conflict resolutions more intensively than we do now," he said.

Gabriel said that the 4,500 NATO troops in the Baltic region do not offer potential aggression against Russia.

The two diplomats discussed bilateral relations between the two countries in addition to international issues such as the fight against terrorism; the implementation of the Minsk Agreement in regards to the Ukraine crisis and the developments in the Syrian peace process.
