Germany: Gabriel calls for de-escalation of Qatar-Gulf conflict

Germany, Berlin
June 27, 2017 at 14:13 GMT -00:00 · Published

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel called for the de-escalation of the Qatar-Gulf conflict, and encouraged the four Arab states currently boycotting the country to seek opportunities for dialogue.

He was speaking at the joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Berlin, Tuesday.

Gabriel said that the boycott, in which Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Bahrain have severed diplomatic relations with Qatar, is growing "deeper and sharper". During his speech, Gabriel suggested that the Emir of Kuwait Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah mediate the conflict between the countries. Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that the situation must be solved through "confidence building measures and dialogue."

Zarif commented on the Muslim entry ban to the US, and described it as "a misplaced policy" which is "misguided." He went on to say that "support for terrorism is measured by the amount of money they spend on buying arms from the US, and not by actually being actually involved in the acts of terrorism."
