Belgium: Macron lauds creation of European defence fund

French President Emmanuel Macron praised the newly-unveiled European defence fund, during his first EU leaders summit in Brussels, Thursday.

The newly-elected head of state said that he wants to 'honour' European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker for his part in helping with the establishment of the fund, which has been taking shape over the last five months. He described the fund as a show of "real progress."

The fund will have a yearly budget of 5.5 billion EUR (6.1 billion USD), which will go towards financing joint military hardware projects and research.
