Ukraine: Experience Chernobyl with comfort: first hostel opens in radioactive wasteland

Ukraine, Chernobyl

The first-ever hostel to be established in Chernobyl's exclusion zone, known to be one of the most radioactive places on earth, has now opened it's doors. Footage captured on Friday shows the 42-room guest-house, fitted with single beds, showers, and free Wi-Fi.

The demand for accommodation in Chernobyl is high due to a large influx of tourists. According to hostel administrator Svetlana Rischenko people travel from all over the world from as far as Ireland to Japan and the US. "We rarely have any free room left", she says.

The world's deadliest nuclear reactor is located in the exclusion zone, which covers around 2,600 square kilometres [1616 miles]in the north of Ukraine. All visitors entering the radioactive wasteland should be accompanied by a Ukrainian guide. One of the guides, Andrey, said that he welcomes the creation of the hostel, pointing out that the region is struggling to accommodate all tourists coming in during peak seasons.

The Chernobyl exclusion zone is an area that was exposed to radiation pollution as a result of an accident at Chernobyl's number four reactor on April 26, 1986. The exclusion zone includes parts of Polesskiyy and Ivankovskiy districts of the Kiev region and the Pripyat River. To date, Chernobyl is still considered to be the worst civic nuclear accident in human history. The immediate death toll from the accident itself numbered 31, while thousands have since suffered radiation-related illnesses such as cancer and infant deformities.
