A local citizen from Zanjili district in western Mosul recalled the recent anti-IS airstrike which reportedly killed 80 civilians, speaking at Yarmuk Bridge in Mosul on Thursday.

"I was at home in Zanjili. Airplanes hit our street and we went to rescue people under the rubble," Manhal said, before adding that approximately four families had died and four houses had been destroyed.

Manhal continued saying that they had pulled alive three or four civilians from under the rubble. "We rescued those who we could save and left the area," he added.

Manhal fled the area on June 1 and now lives together with one of his cousins in another part of Mosul.

On June 8, the UN Human Rights Office said that an initial investigation has confirmed that between 50 and 80 Iraqi civilians were killed in an airstrike Zanjili on May 31. "The UN Human Rights Office in Iraq is seeking further information about these attacks," said the statement.

Speaking in Geneva the same day, Media Officer at UN Human Rights Office Ravina Shamdasani said, "it is very difficult to determine which planes carried out the airstrikes", or whether there was a legitimate military target."
