Kazakhstan: Putin attends opening ceremony of Astana Expo 2017
Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the opening ceremony of the Astana Expo 2017 'Future Energy', during a two-day summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), in Astana, Friday.
Prior to the opening ceremony, Putin was shown a water installation, dubbed 'Energy of the Arctic' and the Northern Sea Route with models of nuclear icebreakers. Among the presented installations was also a four metre (13.12 feet) model iceberg, which is said to symbolise the energy of the Arctic.
During the exhibition, Putin was also shown an installation dedicated to the Amur tiger and an exposition of Tatarstan where the Russian president was reportedly briefed on new projects carried out by state corporations in the region.
The opening ceremony of the Astana expo took place simultaneously at several venues. A multimedia show was held at the Congress Centre, a concert at the Amphitheater and a laser show at the contemporary 'Nur Alem' pavilion, which was attended by Putin, Kazakhstani President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Chinese President Xi Jinping, among other top officials. The opening ceremony ended with a fireworks show.
More than 2 million people are expected to attend the event. The exhibition will open to public on Saturday and will run until September 10.
