Russia: US-led coalition actions 'obstruct' defeat of IS in Syria - Rudskoi

Russian Federation, Moscow
June 9, 2017 at 18:38 GMT -00:00 · Published

Head of the Main Operational Department of the Russian General Staff, Sergei Rudskoi, stated that the actions of the US-led coalition "obstruct the defeat of IS" by Syrian government forces, at a press briefing, in Moscow, Friday.

Rudskoi noted that the main objective of the Syrian government forces, backed by the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS), was not combatting the Syrian armed opposition but "defeating ISIL [the self-proclaimed] Islamic State [IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL] Jabhat Al-Nusra [Al-Nusra Front]; also known as Jabhat Fateh al-Sham and other affiliated terrorist groups."

Rudskoi questioned the motives of the US-led coalition in Syria, saying, "Having declared the goal of combatting international terrorism, the [US-led] coalition hits the Syrian [government] forces while letting [IS] militants out of the encirclement and enforcing such groups in Palmyra and Deir ez-Zor areas." He expressed hope that the US-led coalition would "take certain measures in preventing such cases and will start fighting against ISIL groups on the Syrian territory."

Commenting on the creation of de-escalation zones in Syria, Rudskoi noted that the situation in the war-ravaged country "changed dramatically" and that the civil war "is practically over." He went on to say that thanks to the memorandum on the creation of safety zones in Syria, the restoration of war-torn settlements began and "civilians are returning to their towns."

Earlier in the week, the US confirmed they conducted a strike against pro-government forces near the Syrian city of al-Tanf. The US claimed the forces had ignored repeated warnings and had breached an established deconfliction zone.
