UK: 'Muslim community' had a 'duty to report' deadly London attack suspects - Police

United Kingdom, London
June 5, 2017 at 14:17 GMT -00:00 · Published

Metropolitan police commander for community engagement Mak Chishty stated that the UK's "Muslim community" must do more to root out terrorism, in front of New Scotland Yard, London, on Monday, following the attack at London Bridge and the nearby Borough Market which left at least seven dead and dozens more injured.

Reading out a statement, Chishty said, "The Muslim community appeals to all sections within their own communities to root out the scourge of terrorism which hides amongst their own people and masquerades as Islam." He continued, "The Muslim community is alarmed and concerned that this attack by three people that would've required planning and yet was not reported."

Chisty stressed, "Unlike a single person a lone wolf, type of attack who may keep everything for themselves when you have got three people in concert, necessarily there must have been some discussion around that and some people, even at the closest point to them, must know something."

"And we are saying they had a duty - the Muslim community is saying - they had that duty to report it."

He also stated, "This terrorist attack is an attack on all communities including Muslim communities; every time a terrorist attack takes place Muslim communities face or fear a backlash against them," noting, "If we look at the sentiment of comment on particularly social media platforms that is also negative to Muslim communities, and that adds to a feeling of insecurity."
