Brazil: Thousands call for Temer to resign amid ongoing corruption allegations

Brazil, Sao Paulo
June 5, 2017 at 06:54 GMT -00:00 · Published

Thousands of anti-government protesters continued to call for the resignation of Brazilian President Michel Temer and a new round of elections at a rally at the Largo da Batata in Sao Paulo on Sunday.

Protesters have taken to the streets across the country since Brazilian newspaper O Globo published an article stating that Temer had been recorded agreeing to bribe former President of the Chamber of Deputies Eduardo Cunha.

O Globo stated that the chairman of meat packing company JBS SA Joesley Batista made the recording of Temer as part of his plea bargain negotiations in Brazil's ongoing widespread graft case, Operation Car Wash.

Cunha is currently serving a prison sentence for taking millions in bribes as part of the corruption investigation. He has previously stated that he holds compromising information relating to the probe that could affect several senior Brazilian politicians.

The current Brazilian administration has denied that Temer is guilty of bribery, claiming the president has "never solicited payments to obtain the silence of former deputy Eduardo Cunha."
