Philippines: Mourners place candles at Resorts World Manila after attack

Philippines, Manila
June 3, 2017 at 18:48 GMT +00:00 · Published

Mourners placed candles at the Resorts World Manila to remember the victims of Friday's deadly attack at the site, in the Philippines' capital, Saturday. Many of those placing candles were employees of the resort, who were paying their respects to deceased co-workers.

At least 38 people died and more than 54 were injured after the so-far unidentified gunman set two gambling tables on fire and started shooting in the resort. Almost all victims died from suffocation, as opposed to gunshot wounds, police authorities informed.

Although the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) attempted to claim responsibility for the attack, Philippines National Police Chief Ronald Dela Rosa reported that the attack was, in fact, a lone man attempting to rob gamblers at the resort.

The authorities did not reveal further information on the identity of the attacker. According to reports in local media, eyewitnesses described the attacker as "white gunman speaking English", and "foreigner."
