USA: United States will continue working to reduce emissions - Tillerson

SOT, Journalist (English): "Mr Secretary, any reaction on the Paris Agreement."

SOT, Rex Tillerson, Secretary of State (English): "It was a policy decision; I think it's important that everyone recognises the United States has a terrific record of reducing our own greenhouse gas emmisions. It's something I think we can be proud of and that was done in the absence of the Paris Agreement. I don't think we're going to change our ongoing efforts to reduce our emissions in the future. So hopefully people can put it in perspective."

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was questioned by a journalist on the United States government's decision to withdraw from the Paris agreement on climate change, during a photo opportunity with his Brazilian counterpart Aloysio Nunes, at the State Department, in Washington DC, on Friday.

Responding for calls to comment on the issue, Tillerson stressed it was a "policy decision," before going on to say that he didn't think that the USA would change its efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

He said, "I think it's important that everyone recognises the United States has a terrific record of reducing our own greenhouse gas emmisions."

Trump's decision to withdraw the country from the climate accord is said to have been influenced by a letter signed by 22 Republican US senators who sent a two-page letter last week urging him to stick to his campaign pledge and pull out.

The Paris Agreement is the first legally-binding global deal aimed at reducing climate emissions in the fight against climate change. Together the US and China represent almost 40% of all global emissions. In 2013 Trump tweeted that global warming was "a total and very expensive hoax".
