Steeped in idyllic surroundings in the German countryside, the quaint medieval village of Herxheim am Berg looks like it belongs on a postcard. Placed on the touristic wine route, visitors may stop by and see it's crowning glory- the 1000-year-old Saint Jacob's church. However they may be surprised to find that its home to a not-so-twee part of German history- a bell branded with a swastika praising Adolf Hitler. The town's mayor Ronald Becker, explained why he is against taking it down, Thursday.

According to Becker, a clock expert has carried out an evaluation on the bell, which is emblazoned with the words "Everything for the homeland, Adolf Hitler", and advised that it should be protected as a historical monument.

The mayor went on to say that many of the locals are against it being changed because it is perfectly tuned with the other two.

Weighing a heafty 240 kg (2,204 lb) its estimated that the bell would cost up to 50,000 euros to replace.
