Argentina: Torch-lit rally held to demand the release of Milagro Sala

Argentina, Buenos Aires
May 24, 2017 at 04:57 GMT -00:00 · Published

Thousands of torch-bearing protesters marched through the streets of Buenos Aires, Tuesday, to demand the immediate release of jailed indigenous activist Milagro Sala.

Demonstrators arrived at the Sheraton Hotel where a series of Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) hearings will be held until Friday, May 26. Although the IACHR representatives stated earlier that they will not discuss matters related to Argentina, the area outside the hotel was illuminated by thousands of torches as protesters demanded freedom for Sala and other Tupac Amaru activists.

Members of the Tupac Amaru, the Argentine Workers' Central Union (CTA), the Association of State Workers (ATE) and other unions as well as human rights organisations joined the march.

Sala is a leader of the Tupac Amaru association, part of the ATE in Jujuy, and a leading figure in the Movimiento Piquetero of Argentina. She was arrested on embezzlement charges on January 16, 2016, after taking part in a protest against reforms to social funding introduced by Jujuy's local government. Many of Sala's supporters argue that her arrest was politically motivated after the Governor of Jujuy Gerardo Morales accused her of "incitement to commit crimes and public disturbance."
