Iraq: Security forces fend off Islamic State fighters from Mosul frontline

Iraq, Mosul
May 22, 2017 at 18:42 GMT -00:00 · Published

Iraqi security forces defended the front line of Mosul's old city from Islamic State militants on Monday morning.

Lieutenant Colonel Hussin Zegit Lazim and his troops set up sniper positions as well as trenches, from which they fired positions held by members of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) with mortars, humvees and assault rifles.

Lazim eyed IS-held areas from a rooftop position, including the world famous Al Nuri Mosque which still flies the IS flag.

"All IS bases have been destroyed and all the positions have been destroyed, if God is willing we will recapture it soon," the Lieutenant said.

Lazim explained that the operation was made more difficult by the fact that people remain trapped inside the city, where he said that IS is "punishing them, killing them or harming them."

The military operation against IS in Mosul began on October 17 last year. IS captured the city in 2014 and the offensive is now fronted by the US-led anti-IS coalition and the Iraqi military.
