Germany: Petry and Pretzell cancel speeches at AfD demo picketed by hundreds
Hundreds of protesters picketed a rally of the Alternative fuer Deutschland (AfD) party in the centre of Gelsenkirchen, Friday afternoon, prompting two main speakers at the rally, former leader Frauke Petry and main candidate for the local elections Marcus Pretzell, to cancel their speeches.
Two groups of anti-AfD protesters heckled the AfD gathering from two opposing sides, making noises and chanting against the party throughout the entire event. The protesters exhibited placards with anti-AfD messages, such as "Alternative no thanks" and "No alternative for Germany."
Despite the tension, heavy police presence ensured that all gatherings concluded without major disturbances.
Residents of Gelsenkirchen will vote in the state-wide elections, for Nordrhein-Westfalen, on Sunday.
