Serbia: Communist pies French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy in the face

Serbia, Belgrade
May 11, 2017 at 09:33 GMT -00:00 · Published

French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy got a cake shoved in his face by a communist activist who denounced his support for the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, in Belgrade, Wednesday.

The incident took place during a discussion session, following a screening of Levy's film 'Peshmerga', at the International Documentary Film Festival BELDOCS, in the Serbian capital.

Footage shows Levy receiving cream in his face, after which he continues speaking unperturbed. Activists belonging to the League of Yugoslav Communist Youth (SKOJ) interrupted Levy's speech, with shouts, "Murderer, get out of Belgrade" and "This bastard advocated the bombing of Yugoslavia eight years before the NATO intervention." Levy responded by telling the activists, "Long live democracy in Belgrade."

One SKOJ member also climbed the stage holding a banner reading "Bernard Levy advocates imperialist murders." The activist was later forced to leave the room by a security officer.

Activists have repeatedly condemned Levy's stance on the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s and his support for the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. This is not the first time the French philosopher was pied. Levy has had a cake shoved in his face nearly a dozen times, with the first of such incident dating back to 1985, when he was the target of Belgian writer and notorious 'pie thrower' Noel Godin.
