Argentina: Country unites to reject law proposing early release for Dirty War criminals

Argentina, Buenos Aires
May 11, 2017 at 06:13 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of thousands of people descended on Buenos Aires, Wednesday, to protest a Supreme Court ruling that looked set to release convicted human rights offenders. Protesters were wearing their customary white handkerchiefs, which they tie around their necks often scribed with the name of a victim who suffered under the country's junta.

That proposed law would have seen the reduction in sentences for human rights abusers based on a repealed law. The process was stopped, however, when lower court judges denounced the decision and Congress united to ban any reduction in jail sentences for those convicted of crimes against humanity, which were committed during the country's military dictatorship 1976-83.

Human rights activist, Nora Morales de Cortinas, addressed the crowd, stating "It has to be clear that crimes against humanity are not common crimes, they are not subject to be prescriptive, they cannot be subject to amnesty."

She continued, "The genociders 41 years after the coup haven't confessed the fate of our sons and daughters, and there are still more than 300 men and women living under a false identity."

Human rights groups estimate around 30,000 people were killed during the seven year rule of the military government. One year after the government was established, mothers of the disappeared began gathering at Plaza de Mayo to demand the whereabouts of their missing children.
