UK: French nationals in London vote in presidential election

United Kingdom, London
May 7, 2017 at 14:32 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of French nationals lined up outside the Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle to vote in the second round of the French presidential election in London, Sunday.

The decisive round of the election is contested between independent Emmanuel Macron and the Front National's Marine Le Pen.

Commenting on the candidates, one voter Ihsen said that she is "going to be voting for Emmanuel Macron" because she likes "his policies and second I don't like Marine Le Pen at all."

Fellow voter Ami said that she is not voting for Macron, but rather against Le Pen; "I don't know why Macron but I know why not Le Pen, that's why, just because no Le Pen."

Some 350,000 French nationals reside in the UK, of which more than 100,000 have registered to vote. In mainland France, the turnout at midday was 28.23 percent, according to French interior ministry.

Some 47 million voters began casting their ballots at about 70,000 polling stations around the France at 8am (06:00 GMT). The polling stations in metropolitan France are open until 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT) after which first estimates of the results are expected.
