Yemen: Hospital at breaking point as Cholera outbreak hits Sanaa

Yemen, Sanaa
May 6, 2017 at 11:46 GMT -00:00 · Published

Patients lay in halls and gathered in makeshift open-air wards at the al-Sabeen Hospital Saturday, Sanaa, as a Cholera outbreak gripped the Yemeni capital.

Exceeding its full capacity, the al-Sabeen Maternity and Child Hospital laid out a number of beds in its outer yard as a makeshift cholera ward.

"It started with constant diarrhea and vomiting since two o'clock in the morning," Um Faisal, mother of a cholera patient recounted as she waited on the floor of the hospital corridor. "We went to the hospital at nine in the morning and we couldn't find a place for the patient to stay, because of how crowded it was," she added.

Spokesman of the Yemeni Ministry of Public Health and Population Abdel Rahim al-Kahlani said that the total number of cholera cases in Yemen has reached 1,350, with two thirds of the cases found in Sanaa. "This is why you notice the overcrowding of the hospital with patients," al-Kahlani explained.

Yemen currently faces a variety of health hazards inflicted by the Saudi-led bombing campaign, which began in March 2015 and continues to this day.

Almost 3.3 million Yemenis, including 2.1 million children are suffering from acute malnourishment with over 7 million people facing the plight of starvation, but numbers could increase if the conflict continues to rage on and more aid is not delivered quickly.

Casualty figures have exceeded 10,200 people, with a reported 40,000 injured and more than three million people displaced, according to UN figures.
