Russia: Putin to discuss alleged LGBT rights violations with prosecutor general

Russian Federation, Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the country's human rights ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova in Moscow, Friday, to discuss the alleged gay rights violations in the North Caucasus.

Moskalkova told Putin that she had "sent a number of petitions" to Russia's Prosecutor General Yury Chaika and other Russian investigative authorities, and asked the president "to instruct, perhaps to establish an interdepartmental working group which could, in the central part, not in Chechnya, to accept complaints from citizens, if any."

The Russian president in his turn promised he will discuss the issue with the responsible authorities. "Of course, I will talk to the prosecutor general, the interior minister, so that they will support you regarding the issue you raised and look further into what is happening in the North Caucasus with people of unorthodox sexual orientation whether it's factual or rumored."

In early April, the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta published a report of mass arrests of gay men in the Chechen Republic. The article claimed that around 100 people were detained while at least three people were killed. Novaya Gazeta later published material on special prisons for homosexuals, where they have been allegedly tortured.
