Kazakhstan: Russia's Lavrentiev hopes Syria captives exchange working group settled soon

Russian Special Envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev stated that a working group on the exchange of captives between Syria's warring parties could be settled by Thursday evening, at a press conference, in Astana, Thursday. The press conference took place following a new round of Syrian negotiations in the city.

Lavrentiev noted that the protocol on the exchange of captives would be "extremely important" not only for the Syrian armed opposition but also for the Syrian government. Russia's chief negotiator also noted that Moscow was planning to work actively with the US and Saudi Arabia on a political settlement of the Syrian crisis.

Earlier in the day, Syria ceasefire guarantor states, including, Russia, Iran and Turkey, adopted a memorandum on the creation of four safe zones in Syria. The adoption of the memorandum follows Russia’s proposal on setting up so-called de-escalation zones, which aim at separating a number of extremist groups, including the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Al-Nusra Front (also known as Jabhat Fateh al-Sham), from the moderate opposition.

The fourth round of negotiations brokered by Russia, Iran and Turkey kicked off in the Kazakh capital earlier on Wednesday. The next Astana peace talks are set to be held in the middle of July. The talks in the Kazakh capital will be preceded by experts' consultations in Ankara.
