Iraq: Arrested former IS member and Iraqi police chief speak in Kirkuk *EXCLUSIVE*

Iraq, Kirkuk

Kurdish special forces Brigadier General Sarhad Qadir and confessed former Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS) member Maesar Qasim Mahmud spoke exclusively to Ruptly at Kirkuk’s police station, Wednesday.

Speaking from his office, General Qadir said that “in less than a year” they had captured “130 armed ISIS members which have all been sentenced from 15 to 20 years in jail, others life sentence or to be hanged.”

He was doubtful on whether the situation will improve after IS is destroyed, saying "after ISIS there will be more groups and there will be other fights, maybe the situation will get worse."

Former IS member Mahmud, who was captured by Iraqi Security Forces in April, talked about his return to Kirkuk. “I crossed 9 months ago (…) I did all the paperwork and everything was legal. And I was staying in Kirkuk. Then security forces captured me,” the former militant said.

He stated he had left IS grounds in Fatha area because “the situation was getting hard, they were pushing too much on people. They destroyed everything. So, I came (to Kirkuk). I decided that this side was better.”

Mahmud said that he is “not going to go back to them and I will help the security forces. This is what is in my mind and God is a witness. I am not going back.”
