Iraq: Mosul's university library left in ruins following anti-IS operation

Iraq, Mosul
April 30, 2017 at 21:12 GMT -00:00 · Published

A library of the University of Mosul, once known for its rare UNESCO-registered books, lay in ruins with ash blanketing its halls and hundreds of books reduced to rubble, Sunday.

According to reports, more than 100,000 manuscripts and rare documents were destroyed. Following the recapture of the university by the Iraqi forces in January 2017, the university staff, students and volunteers have been clearing the campus from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and symbols belonging to self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS).

Doctor in Genetics Engineering and Coordinator of Life Sciences at the University of Mosul Raed Salm Safar noted that IS had "seized the university and used it as a base for producing their own bombs, IEDs [improvised explosive devices]."

The Mosul University campus was targeted by the US-led coalition in 2016 as it was believed that the site was being used as an IS base. The university, formerly Iraq's second-largest educational and research centre, and its students have since been relocated to the Aland Motel in Dohuk, a city north of Mosul, which became one of the university's many makeshift campuses.
