UN: Russia's Zakharova calls on UN to develop strategy to counter 'fake news'
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Russia would back the United Nations in developing a strategy to combat "fake news," at the 39th Session of the Committee on Information in New York on Tuesday.
She stated that currently, “freedom of speech, impartiality and objectivity are sacrificed to political conjuncture, and the global information sphere is degrading and disintegrating into politically biased fragments.”
Zakharova noted that “media resources are experiencing a crisis of confidence from the audience," which was reflected in the mass production of fake news.
“Our delegation proposes to include the recommendations for the Department of Public Information to begin work on developing the basic parameters of a strategy to combat fake news and disinformation in the text of the resolutions to be prepared by the Committee on Information of the UN General Assembly," she concluded.
