France: ‘There has been a certain fierceness from the press’ – Parisians express views on media bias

Parisians gave their opinions on allegations of bias and smear campaigns from the French media, after voting in the first round of the 2017 French presidential elections at a polling station in central Paris on Sunday.

One voter, Clothilde Bertrand, said that the media "took sides, certainly. With their attitudes, with their questions...they absolutely took sides." She added that “they looked a lot for troubles especially against Mr. Fillon and also against Miss Le Pen."

Another woman, Alice Sutra Fourcade, asserted that there had been “a certain fierceness from the press which is difficult to deny,” emphasising reporting on Francois Fillon in particular.

Voter Marie Veillon, however, claimed that "the accusations have no ground and it was the duty of the press to reveal certain information.” She added: “I think that I am lucky to be living in a country where the press can reveal compelling information during a presidential campaign."

Most polling stations opened at around 08:00 local time (06:00 GMT). An initial exit poll is expected after the last polling stations close at 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT). The first round will be contested by a total of 11 candidates. Should no candidate reach a majority, the top two candidates will go head-to-head in a second and decisive round, scheduled for May 7.
